SAN DIEGO ---- Jacob Hester was listed at 5-foot-11, 225 pounds in last season's Chargers media guide. A year later, that description no longer applies.

The second-year fullback has bulked up this offseason to better deal with the blocking responsibilities of his position after spending his final college season as primary rusher.

Hester looks powerful these days, but he hasn't gotten too big for his own good. He's moving well, and the added size doesn't prevent him from being a productive pass catcher and occasional runner out of the backfield.

He proved that during minicamp and the offseason coaching sessions, which concluded for veterans on Thursday.

Hester is more of hybrid back than the prototypical fullback Chargers fans grew accustomed to when Lorenzo Neal lined up in front of LaDainian Tomlinson earlier this decade. And finding that delicate balance between rhino and antelope has been no easy task for Hester.

"There was a time this offseason when I was trying to gain a bunch of muscle for playing fullback," Hester said last week. "But I got to a point where they stopped me and said, 'Don't forget that you still need to run the ball a little bit,' which meant they didn't want me to gain too much weight.

"There's a point where you can get too big and too stiff, and that's when you have to back off a little bit. It's a tough balance, trying to find that ideal weight where you can be versatile and effective, but I feel like we got it done."

Hester's magic number is 240 pounds. Hester rather enjoyed reaching his ideal playing weight, which involved a strenuous workout regimen and a little gluttony.

"It's pretty easy," Hester said. "You go home, let the wife cook and eat 'til you can't eat anymore. Then you work out like crazy and try to turn it into muscle. But in order to maintain the weight you want, you really have to watch your diet."

Committe Proposes Replay Change

This Will Make San Diego Happy

It amazes me how much crap Charger fans get from fans of other teams about the Cutler fumble in week 2 that would have (and should have) ended the game. It's so easy to minimize the impact of that botched call by Ed Hochuli when it isn't your team on the receiving end, and I guarantee that fans of every other NFL team would be reacting the same way if it happened to them. So as much as I like Bill Williamson, I think he has sided with the faction that rolls its eyes at the Chargers:

"This will make San Diego Happy" - No it won't make us happy because it can't change the past, but thanks for the hearty bowl of condescension.

"San Diego spewed its venom" - Venom? Really?? Yes, there were a handful of unibomber fans that were venomous, but San Diego as whole? Come on.

In hindsight, does it matter anymore? No. We won the division anyway, and that loss in Denver generated a thrilling end to the season. You might even call it a blessing in disguise, because that ride at the end of the 2008 season was so much fun to watch. Also, consider the odds of that happening again. It's unlikely that the Chargers would encounter that again, but it still could. Which is why I'm glad the replay change is being looked at, because mistakes by officials should be able to be corrected so those same mistakes do not change the outcome of a game.

Ok, that is totally corny but I can't hide my elation that arguably the GCOAT (greatest Charger of all time) will remain so at least through the 2009 season. No need to go into details here since our forums have plenty 'o commentary, but there is something interesting to point out. It certainly appears quite obvious that Dean Spanos had to step in and put pressure on AJ Smith to pull the trigger on this deal. Smith was clearly ready to lowball Tomlinson right out of town in his typical John Wayne fashion, but there are times when the president must step in. In this case it's important on a PR level because Tomlinson is so revered by the fans, it could mean financial backlash if he was discarded so whimsically the way former fan favorites Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison were "released". AJ Smith only sees the present and near-future. Dean Spanos sees the overall landscape of the San Diego Charger franchise and the intrinsic value of a rare Hall of Fame quality player like LaDainian Tomlinson to the fanbase.

It doesn't hurt that LT "considered" the Denver Broncos as a new home. Looks like he knows how to play hardball too.

CHARGERS AT STEELERS (12-4)

Last meeting: On Nov. 16 at Pittsburgh, the Steelers beat the Chargers in the first 11-10 game in NFL history. Jeff Reed kicked the winning field goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Series history: Steelers lead 20-8, including 13-2 in Pittsburgh

Postseason history: Chargers lead 2-0, winning both games in Pittsburgh, in the 1982 wild-card playoffs and the 1994 AFC Championship Game

Steelers this season: Led by the league's top-ranked defense, Pittsburgh won six of their last seven games and captured the AFC North title. One question mark for the Steelers: The condition of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who suffered a concussion in the regular-season finale a week ago today.
